F1 Retro 1980 by Mark Hughes

Grand Prix editor of Motorsport Magazine Mark Hughes is about to publish the second book in his F1 Retro Series. This time focusing on 1980, a year that marked a watershed moment in Grand Prix History. It was the beginning of modern Formula One, as Bernie Ecclestone came into conflict with the traditional sporting authority governing body FISA and its boss Jean-Marie Balestre.

The book details the FISA-FOCA war, as well the glove-off fight between independent teams such as Brabham and Williams both whom were beginning to fully exploit the potential of ground-effect technology.

Driver rivalry was also rife in the 80s and Mark highlights the duel between Championship rivals Alan Jones and Nelson Piquet.  Carlos Reutemann helped Williams secure its first Constructors’ Championship and the legendary Gilles Villeneuve was flexing his skills at Ferrari in the T5.

There is a race by race analysis, including fascinating technical details on all the cars and contributions are also included from Alan Jones and Patrick Head.  All this is accompanied by endless large format period photos from both on and off the track.
