Taking place at The Wing at Silverstone ahead of the Silverstone Classic weekend, the inaugural Competition Car Sale presented a unique auction of a selection of rare, best of breed racing cars and associated lots.

Held on the Thursday evening after driver testing at the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, the sales room was packed with drivers and historic racing enthusiasts, while telephone and online bidders watched the live stream. A bidding frenzy ensued for a number of cars, recording a total sales sum of £1million*.

Highlights of the sale were many and included:

A 1959 Cooper Monaco, which realised £219,375*, after a flurry of bidding from the room and on the telephones. The car, which has raced at both Goodwood Revival and Members’ Meeting recorded the fastest lap time at the 2007 Revival event as well as coming 2nd in the 2012 Silverstone Classic event. It was previously a VSCC and HGPCA front-runner and today is presented in a ready-to-race condition – ready to continue it’s race-winning pedigree.

A 1979 Ford Capri Group 1 achieved a record-breaking** £92,812* after a healthy start from a plethora of commission bids. The car, which was raced by 14 times Le Mans race veteran and racing legend Gordon Spice, is chassis number CC10 – the ex-Autocar Capri as raced in the 1979 season. It also competed in the Le Mans 4 Hours, Spa 24 Hour, and 24 Hours of Paul Ricard.

Sold with its trophies from the period, as well as matching specification set-up sheets and heritage photographs, it also comes with a quantity of parts and homologation papers. This is a unique and exciting prospect, one that had significant interest in the lead up to the event and in the room on the day.

A 1975 Osella PA3 BMW M12 – named after its founder Vincenzo Osella – achieved £140,625. The Osella team began life racing Abarth sports cars in the Sixties. Osella expanded into single seater racing in 1974 to expand their racing business, eventually leading to the PA3 BMW M12.

The car was initially used for hill climbing and competed in the 1976 Monza 4 Hours. Complete with a new carbon racing tub and replacement engine after a nut and bolt rebuild, the car is presented in a ready-to-race condition, representing a great opportunity for the new owner.

Consignments are now being invited into the Salon Privé Sale, with interest placed on high-end classic and modern supercars, and takes place at Blenheim Palace on Friday 4 September.
